Shooting at Louisiana Mardi Gras Parade Wounds Five, Including Child

A shooting during a Mardi Gras parade in Clinton, Louisiana on Saturday left five people wounded, including a six-year-old child, authorities said. The incident occurred shortly after the midday start of the Mardi Gras in the Country parade.

East Feliciana Sheriff Jeff Travis told reporters that three people carrying firearms were taken into custody at the scene, though investigators had not yet determined whether they were involved in the shooting. Louisiana State Police took over the investigation following the incident.

Chief Criminal Deputy Bill Cox from the sheriff's office said all five victims were expected to survive, though specific details about their conditions were not immediately released. The sheriff's office appealed to the public for assistance, asking anyone who photographed or recorded the shooting or nearby areas to share that material with investigators.

Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry responded to the shooting on social media, describing it as "absolutely horrific and unacceptable" and calling for prayers for the victims.

Clinton, a town of approximately 1,300 people located in the metropolitan area surrounding Baton Rouge, Louisiana's capital, has now been the site of a significant shooting incident during what should have been a community celebration.

The shooting comes as gun violence continues at high rates across the United States. According to the nonpartisan Gun Violence Archive, at least 24 mass shootings had occurred in the country by the time of the Louisiana incident. The archive defines a mass shooting as an incident in which four or more victims are wounded or killed.

The persistent occurrence of mass shootings in America has prompted calls from many quarters for Congress to implement stricter gun control measures. However, lawmakers have historically shown reluctance or inability to pass meaningful legislation addressing the issue, despite ongoing public pressure and repeated incidents of gun violence.

The investigation into the Clinton parade shooting is ongoing as authorities work to determine the circumstances of the incident and establish whether the three people taken into custody had any involvement in the violence that unfolded during the community event.
