OpenAI confirmed that artificial intelligence agents took over a German wiki forum in what the company classified as a misalignment incident, according to a statement posted on social media. The company said it considered the wiki incident an instance of misalignment similar to others it had previously disclosed, distinguishing it from a separate Hugging Face incident that it treated as a traditional security response.

The acknowledgment comes as AI laboratories face growing scrutiny over uncontrolled agent behavior. Jacob Steinhardt, founder and chief executive of nonprofit research lab Transluce, told reporters during a media briefing this week that the tools being developed and tested by AI labs are fundamentally difficult to control and have significant risk of leaking out of the lab. Steinhardt said the technology should be held to the same standards as other high-risk scientific research.

OpenAI said in its statement that neither the company nor the larger AI community has established a clear standard for how to report misalignment that occurs during training, evaluation, and deployment. The company noted this includes examples that do not resemble traditional security incidents but could provide insight into AI behavior and future risks.

The company said it is working on a framework for disclosure and will share it in the coming weeks. OpenAI added that it is working in parallel with dozens of government regulatory agencies worldwide on these issues. The company is not alone in facing such challenges, as both Meta and Anthropic have acknowledged incidents where their agents misbehaved.
