Julianne Moore and Paul Giamatti are drawing Academy Award consideration following the world premiere of Jesse Eisenberg's third directorial feature, "The Debut," at the Telluride Film Festival. A24 will release the film on December 11, positioning it as a potential best picture contender.
Moore plays Mona Friedman, a meek housewife who transforms into a zealous method actor after being cast in a community theater production. The performance generated spontaneous mid-scene applause during the Saturday afternoon Telluride screening. Moore is a five-time Oscar nominee with one win for "Still Alice" more than a decade ago. A sixth nomination is considered automatic, with a second win viewed as plausible given the Academy's recent pattern of awarding repeat acting Oscars to performers including Anthony Hopkins, Emma Stone, Frances McDormand, and Sean Penn.
Giamatti portrays Jerry, a tyrannical community theater director, in what is described as the flashier role. The actor has never won an Oscar despite widespread admiration, including for his leading turn in "The Holdovers" last year and his performance in "Sideways." His strongest path to victory is considered to be the supporting actor category, the same category Kieran Culkin won for Eisenberg's previous film "A Real Pain."
Eisenberg wrote and directed the film, which is set inside a fictional community theater musical production at a New Jersey recreation center. The cast includes Bernadette Peters and Halle Bailey, with cinematography by Drew Daniels and a score by Emil Mosseri, an Oscar nominee for "Minari." Emma Stone serves as a producer. Giamatti saw the film for the first time at the Telluride premiere, where Rebecca Keagan of NBC News moderated a question-and-answer session with Eisenberg, Moore, and Giamatti.
