Coco Gauff reached the fourth round of the US Open on Saturday, defeating Spain's Cristina Bucsa 6-3, 6-4, but fellow Americans Madison Keys and Amanda Anisimova were eliminated in a mixed day for home hopes in New York. Gauff, the 2023 US Open champion, extended her winning streak to eight consecutive straight-set victories at tour level, including her French Open title run earlier this year.
Keys lost to China's Zheng Qinwen 1-6, 7-6 (7-3), 7-5 after holding a 5-0 lead and a match point in the third set. The 2025 Australian Open winner said she felt scared during the collapse, losing the final seven games. Keys, who reached the 2017 US Open final, said she felt as though she could not play tennis anymore in the final set and acknowledged she has been struggling and needs to make changes. Anisimova, last year's US Open runner-up, lost in straight sets to Austrian 24th seed Anastasia Potapova.
Gauff, now 22, has reached the second week at the US Open for a fifth consecutive year. She rallied from a 3-1 deficit in the first set against Bucsa and immediately responded after being broken to love in the second set. Gauff said she is handling the pressure better than last year, when her run also ended in the fourth round. She described waking up surprised that the tournament was already in the third round and said she is enjoying the experience rather than putting excessive pressure on herself.
As many as five American women could reach the fourth round, with Iva Jovic still to play alongside Gauff, Jessica Pegula, Taylor Townsend, and Emma Navarro. In the men's draw, American players could contest six of the eight fourth-round matches, with Ben Shelton, Frances Tiafoe, Tommy Paul, and Alex Michelsen already through and two more still to compete.
