Spotify's premium subscriber base grew to 300 million in the second quarter of 2026 after adding 7 million paying customers, surpassing the company's earlier projections for the quarter. The streaming service reported 777 million total monthly active users across both its paid and free tiers as of the end of Q2, slightly below the company's guidance of 778 million.

The milestone underscores Spotify's continued expansion of its premium tier, which remains the primary source of revenue for the company compared to its free, advertising-supported service.

Beyond subscriber growth, Spotify is pursuing new revenue opportunities through artificial intelligence. The company has partnered with Universal Music Group on a licensing agreement that will enable subscribers to create song covers and remixes using AI technology. This marks the first instance of Spotify allowing listeners to generate content through artificial intelligence on its platform.

The feature will likely be offered as a paid add-on within Spotify's app. Premium users will gain access to remix tools and the ability to create AI-generated covers of songs from participating artists. Spotify indicated that the tool could generate additional income for artists and songwriters beyond their regular royalty payments. However, the companies did not disclose the financial specifics of the deal or identify which artists would participate.

Universal Music Group's roster includes major artists such as Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande, and Billie Eilish, though specific participation details remain unclear. Alex Norström, co-chief executive of Spotify, described the initiative as addressing "hard problems for music." He emphasized that the approach is grounded in "consent, credit and compensation for the artists and songwriters that take part."

Lucian Grainge, chief executive of Universal Music, framed the collaboration as supporting "human artistry" while creating "additional revenue opportunities for artists and songwriters." He noted that the initiative represents a responsible approach to AI that will benefit the entire music ecosystem.

The partnership reflects Spotify's broader strategy to expand beyond traditional music subscriptions and integrate artificial intelligence into its services. In May, the company launched a beta feature allowing AI agents to create personalized podcast briefings for individual users. These daily briefings remain private to each listener.

The music industry continues to grapple with concerns about AI, particularly regarding copyright and the role of artificially generated music. In response, Spotify introduced a verification system in April to help users distinguish between human artists and AI-generated content. The company's "Verified by Spotify" badge, marked with a green checkmark, appears on artist profiles and search results. According to Spotify, the badge indicates that a music profile has been reviewed and meets the platform's authenticity standards.

The verification effort addresses what Spotify characterizes as an essential concern in the AI era: the ability to trust the authenticity of the music listeners encounter on the platform.
