South Korea has positioned itself as a crucial player in global semiconductor manufacturing. The country's two largest chipmakers, Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, have both joined the trillion-dollar company club alongside Taiwan's TSMC, driven primarily by explosive demand for AI chips. SK Hynix's stock price surged 1,000 percent over the past year, while Samsung climbed 500 percent.
This semiconductor boom has transformed South Korea's broader economy. The Kospi index, South Korea's main stock market, has surged 220 percent in the past year and recently reached an all-time high, vaulting the country past India to become the world's sixth largest share market. The index now exceeds the equity markets of the UK, Germany, and France.
However, analysts note concentration risks in South Korea's market expansion. Research indicates that Samsung and SK Hynix have contributed up to 70 percent of the Kospi's growth in 2026, leaving the index heavily exposed to fluctuations in global AI spending and potential supply chain disruptions. The Kospi's volatility index recently reached an exceptionally high level of 75, compared to its historical average of 20, suggesting investor nervousness despite the market rally.
The memory chip market serves different needs than Nvidia's advanced processors. Three companies dominate memory production: Samsung, SK Hynix, and American chipmaker Micron, which recently joined the trillion-dollar valuation club. Their success reflects AI's enormous appetite for these components.
Demand appears underpinned by major technology companies, often called "AI hyperscalers," including Meta, Amazon, Alphabet, and Microsoft. These firms have committed substantial capital to AI infrastructure development, potentially supporting continued growth in the semiconductor sector.
