Trump Administration Imposes New Tariffs on Over 80 Countries

The Trump administration issued fresh tariffs ranging from 10% to 12.5% on more than 80 countries, taking effect Friday. The new levies replace a temporary 10% global duty that expired, allowing the administration to continue imposing trade measures without congressional approval.

The administration justified the tariffs under Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974, citing concerns about forced labor in goods imported from affected countries. The move comes after the US Supreme Court ruled in February that Trump had illegally used executive power to implement previous global tariffs, prompting the administration to pursue an alternative legal framework.
