At a NATO summit in Ankara on Tuesday, President Trump renewed his push for the United States to acquire Greenland, departing from Denmark's sovereignty over the autonomous territory. He told reporters Greenland "should be controlled by the United States, not by Denmark."

The demand represents another flashpoint at the tense summit. Trump also threatened to withdraw American troops from Europe and suggested his commitment to defending the continent depends on European leaders' decisions on immigration and energy policy. Denmark has said it will defend Greenland against any attempts to alter its territorial status.
