A massive fire at a distribution warehouse in Tracy, California, continued burning Friday as firefighters battled to contain the blaze at the one million square foot Medline Industries facility. The fire ignited Thursday afternoon and spread across the street into a nearby FedEx facility, though crews were able to block further expansion, according to South San Joaquin County Fire Authority Chief Randall Bradley.
The warehouse complex, located in an industrial park about 55 miles east of San Francisco, also houses fulfillment and distribution centers for Amazon, Home Depot, and FedEx. Authorities evacuated surrounding facilities as a precaution, with officials particularly concerned about wind conditions that heightened the risk of spreading embers. However, no homes required evacuation by early Friday morning.
The inferno produced thick black smoke visible in billowing clouds from aerial images, with flames and a red hot glow visible beneath the structure. Medline, a major supplier of latex gloves, masks, surgical instruments and other medical supplies, confirmed that all employees and personnel at the site were accounted for. A company spokesperson stated: "We are coordinating closely with local authorities and first responders as we assess the fire's impact and will share more details as they become available."
Firefighters faced significant obstacles during the response. Fire Chief Bradley identified a broken sprinkler system and low water pressure in hydrants at the facility as hindering efforts to fight the blaze. These issues stemmed from the warehouse's water system rather than the city's infrastructure. Environmental conditions also worsened the situation, with low humidity, high temperatures, and strong winds exacerbating the fire's spread.
Air quality emerged as a growing concern for residents across the region. Tracy Mayor Dan Arriola said officials were evaluating air quality and potential impacts to area residents as thick smoke blanketed the surrounding area. The fire added to existing air quality challenges in the San Joaquin Valley, where residents were already contending with triple-digit temperatures.
Firefighters indicated they expected to remain on scene for an extended period to fully extinguish hot spots and prevent the fire from reigniting. The scale of the warehouse and the intensity of the blaze required substantial deployment of firefighting resources from multiple agencies across the region.
No injuries have been reported in connection with the fire. Authorities have initiated an investigation into the cause of the blaze, though results remain pending. Medline's Tracy facility served as a key distribution hub for the company's operations in Northern California, supplying medical and surgical products to healthcare providers throughout the region.
