The BBC has cancelled its planned Doctor Who Christmas special and announced the show will be put out to competitive tender following the departure of showrunner Russell T Davies and production company Bad Wolf.

The broadcaster made the announcement after Davies and Bad Wolf, who took over the series as part of a major reboot in 2021, decided collectively with the BBC not to proceed with the previously announced festive episode. The decision reflects broader changes affecting the long-running science fiction programme, which has been part of British television since 1963.

Davies explained the reasoning behind the cancellation in a statement, saying the Christmas special was originally planned to secure the show's future when there was uncertainty about what would happen next. "Now we do know, there's no need for it," he wrote. He confirmed that no script was written and no actor was approached for the next Doctor role.

Despite losing the Christmas special, Davies indicated that viewers will ultimately benefit from the changes. He suggested fans will receive more Doctor Who content overall when the show returns, making the wait worthwhile. "For the record: there's no script, I never wrote it, and no actor was ever approached to play the next Doctor," he stated, anticipating fan speculation about what might have been.

The competitive tender process will allow the BBC to invite production companies to propose their vision for the series' future direction. This could result in significant creative changes, with Davies joking that everything remains uncertain. "Will they keep the theme tune? Will they lose the blue box? Will they bring back the Drahvin? It's all up for grabs," he wrote.

The shake-up comes during a challenging period for Doctor Who. Ncuti Gatwa, the 15th Doctor, recently stepped down from the role after making his full-episode debut in 2023. Additionally, Disney+ ended its co-production deal with the series last year, and viewing figures have struggled to recover momentum.

The BBC acknowledged that cancelling the Christmas special would disappoint fans who had been promised a holiday spectacular for 2026. However, the broadcaster emphasised its commitment to the series and stated that when Doctor Who returns, it will do so "in all its glory."

The corporation also confirmed that a new Doctor Who animation series for CBeebies remains in production, indicating ongoing investment in the franchise despite the current transition.
