A Virginia man has been sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for orchestrating the deaths of his wife and another man in a murder plot involving the family's Brazilian au pair.

Brendan Banfield, a former Internal Revenue Service law enforcement officer, was convicted of killing Christine Banfield, a pediatric intensive care nurse, and Joseph Ryan on February 24, 2023. According to prosecutors, Banfield and au pair Juliana Peres Magalhães devised a scheme to murder Christine Banfield while using Ryan as an unwitting fall guy.

Banfield claimed he shot Ryan in self-defense after discovering Ryan attacking his wife at their Virginia home that morning. However, prosecutors presented evidence showing that Banfield and the au pair, with whom he was having an affair, deliberately set up the murder plot. The au pair had been living with the family and caring for their children when the affair began.

The case centered on Banfield's infidelity and how it led to the fatal scheme. Prosecutors successfully argued that the murders were premeditated and carried out as part of a calculated plan rather than acts of self-defense or chance encounters.

The double homicide took place at the family's Virginia residence, where Magalhães had been employed as a caregiver. The investigation revealed how the affair between Banfield and the au pair developed into a conspiracy to kill Christine Banfield, with Ryan becoming an unintended victim drawn into the deadly plan.

The case drew significant attention due to its combination of domestic infidelity, the betrayal of trust inherent when a household caregiver becomes involved in criminal activity, and the violent deaths that resulted. The circumstances surrounding the murders highlighted the consequences of the affair and how it escalated into a scheme with fatal outcomes.

Banfield's life sentence means he will spend the remainder of his life incarcerated with no opportunity for release. The conviction and sentencing brought legal closure to a case that resulted in two deaths and destroyed the family. The trial presented compelling evidence of Banfield's role in planning and executing the murders, with the prosecution demonstrating how the relationship with the au pair motivated the criminal conspiracy.

The au pair's involvement in the murders also became part of the legal proceedings, as authorities investigated her role in the scheme. The case illustrated how an extramarital affair within a household could spiral into violence and tragedy, affecting not only the immediate family members but also innocent individuals drawn into the dangerous plot.
